Delivering Autonomous Haulage Readiness in an Arizona Copper Mine

Background & summary

A copper mining operation in Arizona was preparing to introduce autonomous haulage using Caterpillar Command for Hauling.

Supporting autonomous operations required more than deploying new technology. The site needed a communications environment capable of meeting demanding network performance requirements while integrating with its existing operational technology environment.

FTP applied its Journey to Autonomy methodology to guide the project from network design and commissioning through operational validation and ongoing support.

Working alongside the client, Caterpillar, Nokia and Empire Southwest, FTP helped create a structured pathway from autonomy planning to operational readiness.

The Challenge

Autonomous haulage changes what the communications network needs to deliver.

Network availability, latency, coverage and resilience become production-critical when communications infrastructure supports autonomous operations.

For this project, the challenge extended beyond deploying a new private wireless network. The Nokia MPW environment needed to integrate with the site’s existing OT systems while meeting the performance requirements of Caterpillar Command for Hauling.

At the same time, FTP needed to coordinate across the client, Caterpillar, Nokia and Empire Southwest within an aggressive implementation schedule.

The requirement also extended beyond commissioning. The communications environment needed a clear pathway into ongoing operational support as autonomous operations scaled.

Our Approach

CONSULT
FTP worked with project stakeholders to understand the existing operational environment, autonomy requirements and network performance needs.

DESIGN
The communications environment was engineered specifically for autonomous mining workloads, bringing together network architecture, transport, backhaul and integration requirements.

EXECUTE
FTP coordinated implementation, configuration, commissioning and deployment activities alongside the client and project partners.

VALIDATE
Before autonomous haulage commenced, the network environment was tested and optimised to confirm operational readiness for Caterpillar Command for Hauling.

SUPPORT
Following commissioning, the environment transitioned into ongoing remote monitoring, optimisation and operational support through FTP.

The Outcome

Through FTP’s Journey to Autonomy, the project brought planning, design, implementation, validation and ongoing support together within one structured delivery model.

FIRST IN THE UNITED STATES
First CBRS-based autonomous haulage network deployed in the United States.

FASTEST GLOBAL DEPLOYMENT
Fastest global deployment of a Nokia MPW network supporting Caterpillar Command for Hauling.

Following commissioning and validation, the communications environment transitioned directly into ongoing remote operational support, creating continuity between project delivery and long-term performance management.

Today, FTP continues to monitor and optimise the environment, supporting network availability and performance as part of the operation’s autonomous journey.

Why J2A Matters

Autonomous mining projects bring together infrastructure, technology, operational requirements and multiple stakeholders. Treating each component as a standalone deployment can increase complexity and implementation risk. FTP’s Journey to Autonomy provides one structured pathway from early planning through implementation, validation and ongoing support, helping operations move toward autonomy with greater clarity and confidence. One journey. From design to deployment to ongoing operations.
